S1NGULAR - A Retro-psycho Thriller by Ramon J. Goni
Ramon J. Goni of NEER Films . Director of S1NGULAR
S1NGULAR is an experimental short film about our relationship to technology, and how it affects our future.
For decades, we’ve been swept up in a fixed narrative about gender, sexuality, and self-expression. We’ve become victims to problems that would have never even existed, had we looked a bit closer.
As filmmakers, we know that we have a powerful medium to initiate change. But how?
Essentially, I see queer narratives as ways to make people think and feel in a way they’ve never done before. To spark their imagination, instead of being stuck in identity politics. I.e.: The classic “us versus the queer people” scenario.
It’s time to throw light on the imaginary boundaries that we have created.
S1NGULAR is my first step in this endeavor.
“I see queer narratives as ways to make people think and feel in a way they’ve never done before.”
S1NGULAR is an experimental sci-fi short film. It is not only a teaser for what’s to come, but also proof that we’ve got the best possible team to make it happen.
For this, I called my friends:
Cinematographer Jake Saner, who just won a Tribeca Film Festival Award, to frame this short as an actual 70s film.
Greg Swales (The Kardashian family’s official photographer) and Gorge Villalpando- fashion editor and stylist, to capture stills alongside the film. Their artistry pushed the boundaries of my initial aesthetics. Their choices of wardrobe and actions are some I would have never thought of on my own.
Production designer Martha Bernabe created objects that don’t exist (yet). A blast from the future-past...
Legendary hair stylist Thomas Dunkin. Who has basically worked with every rockstar in the history of music…
And of course, the fantastic chemistry between Fin Argus and Sean Ford doing the rest.
Both actors are currently at the top of what they do... crossing boundaries with their work in fashion, film and sex positivity drive projects.
The post process for S1NGULAR was incredibly interesting. We’ve tried to strike a balance between: minimal visual effects, and a period environment that never really existed. Our partners at Scissor Films made this possible.
Music is important for this alt-70s universe. The music is a mix of super weird electronic experimental compositions from the time. That is: Daria Semegen’s incredible work at Columbia University. Nadia Reisenberg and Clara Rockmore’s work with the theremin (a magical instrument). All mixed with new compositions by our music and sound design artists from Retail Space in Brooklyn, NY. They dig the genre we’re exploring as much as I do.
