EVIDENCE CAMERAS - Cinematographer JOE MILLER using Red, Canon, Laowa Rangers, Leica-R Lens

Long time friend and talented filmmaker, Joe Miller is a director of photography with a focus on commercial and documentary production. Most of what Joe captures is real-to-life images of individuals pushing their human ability. Joe maintains a certain amount of athleticism and endurance to keep up. Whatever the mission is Joe commits to getting the shot by putting the camera in the middle of the action to capture genuine moments from pro athletes. Check out what he has to say about his experiences shooting these films with cinema equipment from Evidence Cameras!

Citizen Pro Climber Commmercial

Shot on C500II and Vintage Leica R Cinema Primes

“From the very beginning of this project there was a serious conversation about safety. I’ve had some rock climbing experience but this was my first time bringing a cinema camera and crew. Joining us we had a trained climbing professional who was an expert in rigging and rope safety.”

“I stripped down the camera to just the top handle and mattebox attaching it to a sling around my shoulder which gave me the ability to use my hands freely and get in position for the shot. We knew we wanted to shoot this in the most cinematic way possible but since we had no control of our lighting we were up against a wall (pun intended).”

“I chose to shoot on the CANON C500 II because of its powerful full frame sensor. It gave us the shallow depth of field we were looking for and sports a very nice highlight rolloff color science. The lightweight form factor was very important for this project and the internal NDs gave me one less thing to keep track of while hanging from the side of a mountain.”

“We used LEICA R LENSES on this film which were beautiful but the secret sauce were the IBE IMPRESSIVE FILTERS we used to add in and chop up the lens flares.”

Rapha

Shot on Raptor, Komodo-X, & Laowa Ranger Zooms

“You need to be aware of what the athletes are gonna do and what you need to do to keep up with them. You need to establish where you need to be to capture the actual real moment. The worst thing to do is ask them to fake it.”

“For this project we had to make choices based on our limitations. We were following a pair of professional bicyclists 160 miles across the desert for 12 hours straight. We couldn’t stop filming because they don’t stop cycling. By putting a MotoCrane on a Toyota Tacoma allowed us to keep up in rough terrain and would give us the most options for shot variety.”

“We paired the Laowa Ranger Zoom Lenses with the Red V-Raptor and Komodo-X. This combo allowed us to get high frame rates while keeping us lightweight enough to be flies on the wall. The Rangers provided a good zoom range to get the shots we needed without having to disrupt the riders journey.”
